Social Clubs
Vision Bath runs three social clubs, one in Camerton, one in Keynsham, and one at our Green Park Station offices in Bath. Each club meets once a month (except for August and January). Transport can be arranged for those who are unable to make their own way to the clubs, usually in community minibuses with tail lifts for wheelchairs, and with volunteer drivers and volunteer escorts.

Training Days
Vision Bath runs a programme of half-day training sessions for its volunteers. (The training sessions are also open to those who are not Vision Bath volunteers for a registration fee. Please call 01225 446555 for more details.) There are four topics: visual awareness, manual handling, befriending, and first aid in the office and at social clubs.

Visual awareness:
This includes information on how the eye works and the commonest eye conditions. There is also the chance to try special spectacles which simulate various eye conditions, and to practise how to guide someone with a visual impairment. At the end of the session you can look around the Resource Centre to see the kind of aids and equipment we have in stock.

Manual handling:
This session includes information on the basic principles of manual handling, the mechanics of the back, the do’s and don’ts of assisting people in and out of cars and wheelchairs, and risk assessment.

Befriending:
This training session covers listening skills, issues of confidentiality, identifying needs and offering experiences (at home and outside home) which expand the lifestyle of the member, tele-befriending (maintaining contact through regular phone calls), and the kinds of tasks suitable for a befriender to undertake.

First aid in the office and at social clubs:
This session covers signs and symptoms of injuries and medical conditions,  and how to cope with these situations using basic first aid techniques until medical help arrives. There is also practice with putting someone into a recovery position, and assisting someone who has fallen out of a wheelchair, or helping someone into a vehicle. This training is especially useful for those helping out at the social clubs.

Please contact the Vision Bath office for dates of the next training sessions.
